Candace Cowan, MS, LMHC
Candace is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 30 years experience as a psychotherapist. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Florida State University and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida. She is a Qualified Supervisor in the State of Florida for registered interns under Chapter 491. In addition to private practice, Candace has worked in community mental health, inpatient and residential settings, and held positions in program management and quality improvement.
Candace maintains a general practice working with adolescents through adults, assisting those experiencing anxiety, depression and bereavement. She is certified as a Bereavement Facilitator through the American Academy of Bereavement and has extensive training in grief and loss. The development of coping strategies for each person in managing life’s stressors and dealing with loss is an area Candace focuses on when working with clients.
Candace’s practice involves a special emphasis on maternal health, addressing reproductive challenges, pregnancy loss, and postpartum depression, anxiety, and adjustment. She has completed the internationally recognized training program for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders and the Advanced Perinatal Mental Health training through Postpartum Support International.Learning skills to cope with the fears that appear during a subsequent pregnancy after a loss are also a specialty of her practice. Candace co-facilitated a perinatal loss support group in Brevard County for over eight years for those who experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death and continues to connect couples with perinatal support groups in the community.
Treatment approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Insight-Oriented Therapy, and Psycho-educational Services. Candace views psychotherapy is a collaborative process and encourages her clients to be active participants in goal-setting.
Candace’s community involvement has included membership with the Central Florida Infant Mental Health Task Force, the Brevard Commission on Mental Health and Community Solutions and Space Coast Grief Education Alliance. Candace is a member of FMHCA (Florida Mental Health Counselors Association), SMHCA (Space Coast Mental Health Counselors Association) and PSI (Postpartum Support International).
